MUA Prime & Conceal Palette

Concealers are coming in all shapes, sizes and colours recently and it can be a pretty scary deciding what to buy. I came across this little palette in Superdrug that has a good variety of colours to try and is fairly inexpensive. IMG_1515

Below is a breakdown of colours and how to use them.

Green neutralises red tones and is perfect for acne scars and spots. This is the colour that I have used most of, especially now it is summer, as it’s perfect for covering my slightly singed cheeks and nose.

Purple removes yellow tones and is designed for dull, pasty and yellow complexions.

Pink/Peach/Orange brightens eye area and masks fatigue. It is ideal for dark circles! You should use a deeper shade depending on how dark your complexion is.

Yellow made to cover purple/blue patches. Can be used under eye and on veins etc. Perfect for bruised skin.

Beige The colour in the centre is described by MUA as a highlighter but I guess this really just means a “skin tone” concealer. It could probably be used as a paler version of the Peach shade for very fair skin.

For a more detailed look at how to apply colour correcting make up, check out Jackie Aina’s video on the do’s and don’ts of colour correcting. She has also listed some really great products as well!

I feel that the MUA palette is great value for money at only £4 from Superdrug. It is great for getting to grips with colour correcting concealer techniques and has a nice, creamy consistency. However, it is not ideal for all skin tones as they are all very light shades. It is just a shame that there isn’t another palette available for darker skin tones at this very affordable price.

Bargain Buys! The Denim Jacket

There is a great sort of high when you manage to find a sought after item at an excellent price. I often like visiting charity shops and vintage clothing stores in search of something really amazing. I feel like Indiana Jones, rifling through racks of clothes in the hope of finding lost treasures of old. I am glad to say that my latest find was one of these gems.

Stoke Newington Road in Hackney, London, was where I came across a Vintage Kilo Sale store which enticed me inside with their “Everything £5” sign in the window. It’s early April and the denim jacket will be making a massive come back this year, so I headed straight for the blue hues of the denim rail. After trying a few different styles I finally settled on an old Zara number. It has the perfect, slightly oversized, feel to it and is faded in all the right places. I was over the moon at only spending a fiver on a classic jacket!

Another reason that buying this jacket is so great is that, because I only spent £5 on it, I feel like I could customise it if I wanted to. I know what you are thinking, but I don’t mean like your early 2000’s Metalica patch you had your mum sew on your khaki army jacket! Cringe! We are passed our post-grunge emo phase…

Thankfully, there are now some pretty cool iron-on and sew-on patches and badges out there to spice up your outerwear! There is glitter and guts. Hardcore attitude but sweet as candy pastel shades of desire. Check out Skinnydip and Topshop for the packs shown below. I cannot get enough of the Skinnydip unicorn stuff! It is so beautiful! I am in love.

I always recommend checking out your local second hand clothing store as you can pick up some really great stuff. However, if you are not a fan of rummaging in the vintage shops, check out some of the classic denim available on the high street below.

Makeup essentials for a monster hangover

We’ve all been there, dying in bed with the mother of all hangovers and questioning how you can possibly move on with your life. You’ve made plans for Sunday lunch with the girls and right now you are whole heartedly regretting your life choices.

First things first- grab a coffee and a banana. The caffeine and the potassium will help your hangover subside a little while you calculate an action plan. Below I’ve listed some of my favourite products for an occasion such as this to help get you bouncing back to your usual self- or at least faking it. peaches and clean soap and glory

You have probably slept in last night’s make up, a habit you promised yourself you would break but let’s face it, you never will. Grab yourself some Peaches and Clean Deep Cleansing Milk from Soap & Glory. It’s silky on your skin and strong enough to remove even waterproof mascara! Great for getting rid of last nights slap.

visibly clear moisturiserNext, moisturise! Much like your dry mouth, your skin will be craving hydration after a heavy night on the lash. Try Visibly Clear Pink Grapefruit Oil Free Moisturiser which is great for fighting acne prone skin. I’ve written about this product before and I can’t tell you enough how good it is! It will really help your skin recover from the previous night’s alcohol consumption.

Now you can see your fresh, clean and tired skin. Eeek! It’s this point where you start to question if you’ve always been this ugly, all while trying to control your stomach aching churning.fatigue blur

Make up needs to be fast, easy to apply, with no fussing.Slap on the primer. This is going to make sure that your make up wont irritate your skin even more. The toxins will be slowly rising to the surface of your skin in small, menacing little white heads. Anything you can do to avoid aggravating that process more is definitely recommended. Try Baby Skin Instant Fatigue Blur by Maybelline. It’s not as expensive as other primers on the market but I feel it’s just as good. It will smooth out your skin as well as giving you another layer of protection.

Next the foundation. I absolutely love BB cream! It is the best for every day wear as it is a product with multiple benefits. Most BB creams contain moisturiser, SPF protection, primer and foundation all working to give a natural finish. Try BB water to give your skin more hydration throughout the day. The difference between BB water and the BB cream is that the BB water has a sleeker and smoother application. It doesn’t feel cakey or heavy on the skin either.

Concealer is your best friend today. Those dark circles will never see the light of day! Try Maybelline Superstay 24hour Concealer. It is the best concealer I’ve ever used. I picked it up by accident one day in a Boots 3 for 2 frenzy and I’ve never looked back. It has great coverage and is easy to blend.

Mascara is essential if you don’t want to look like a little mole surfacing from hibernation. The Dior Show mascara is a makeup bag staple. You get fantastic length and definition from even one coat. I love the bristly brush as well. Tip– When at the counter ask for a sample size along with your purchase. It’s great for handbags or overnight bags.

Tinted lip balm is amazing on days like today. Again, it’s an essential for any make up bag. The best I’ve used is the Clinique Chubby Stick range because you can build the colour for the look you want.

You have done it, you’ve successfully pulled your hungover butt together! You can do anything you set your mind to. Go out and grab the day! Final tip– don’t forget some blush or bronzer for your pasty pale face. You don’t want people to know you feel like death warmed up.

Work it.

The fight to keep clear skin in London

When I first moved to London I was excited about all the new adventures I would have. Unfortunately I was not prepared for the havoc it would reap on my skin. All my life I’ve been used to fresh country air and soft Scottish water, using whatever hair products I like and still achieving a silky smooth shine and nothing more than a face wipe before bed for my skin. Sadly this all changed in the big city. My hair became straw-like and my skin was dry and flaky with break outs every other week. I can’t even begin to explain the horror of finding black boggies!

Something had to be done. I have since came up with some choice products to battle the city’s pollution which so far are working brilliantly.

Ocean Salt Facial Scrub by LUSH

First of all this product smells amazing! It smells like warm days by the beach sipping pina coladas and limey mojitos.

The avocado butter and coconut oil in this product soothe and hydrate your skin while the sea salt buffs away dead skin leaving you with a soft and clean complexion.

I leave a little pot of this goodness in the shower for a nice wake up. A tub of 120g will cost you £7.95 which is not a lot of cash to part with for great results. 9/10

Acai Berry Multi-Tasking Micellar Water by Good Things

good things

When I first saw Micellar water in the shops I really did think it was a con. It looked like they had bottled tap water and put a fancy label on it. In reality it has been a brilliant replacement for my face wipes. It removes makeup, even stubborn eye makeup, in a flash.

This is another product with a stunning smell. The blueberry, mango and acai berry also give added vitamin boost-or so says the product information, who really knows. It’s left my skin nice and soft, and since I started using this product I’ve had no more break outs. Woo!

It’s quick with no faffing which means its great for everyday use. The current RRP is £4.49, however, the super savvy among you can head to Boots and grab a bottle for £2.99! Bargain! 8/10

Visibly Clear Pink Grapefruit Oil-Free Moisturiser by Neutrogenaoil free

This moisturiser is said to help keep skin clear which is exactly what I am looking for to combat the dirty London atmosphere. It’s lightweight and silky compared to some sticky solutions on the market, and has a fresh fruity smell. It is recommended for daily usage and I often use it as a base coat before I apply my make up. After a month of usage it has lived up to expectations- no breakouts!

At £4.99 for 50ml it’s perfect and affordable for every day wear. 8/10

Sleek Makeup Matte Me

I am not a fan of lip glosses but this is a really great product simply because it’s not a lip gloss. I bought mine in Birthday Suit which is a really nice nude for everyday wear. It glides on like your normal lip gloss but dries like a matte lipstick. The applicator is great because it’s thin enough for precision application.

I also think the packaging is fabulous for a product that only cost me £4.99 from Superdrug. It looks more expensive and like many of the high end products on the market. A fantastic handbag staple.

The website boasts “long lasting colour all day”. I feel like it’s stayed on my lips for a respectable number of hours and held its ground through a coffee and croissant. However come lunch time I will definitely need to reapply. It also hasn’t dried my lips out or felt cakey like some matte lipsticks do. It’s a definite 8/10.
